Homewood Summary

Homewood is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 15 miles south of the city. The population was 19,543 at the 2010 census. Homewood is bordered by Flossmoor to the east, Chicago Heights to the west, Harvey to the north, and Hazel Crest to the south.

History

Homewood was first settled in 1833 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Homewood Station” due to its location on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1869.
In the late 19th century, Homewood was a popular summer resort for wealthy Chicagoans. The village was home to several large estates, including the estate of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the mechanical reaper.
In the early 20th century, Homewood experienced a period of rapid growth. The village was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1923, but was later reincorporated as a separate village in 1927.

Geography

Homewood is located at 41°31′N 87°41′W (41.5179, -87.6845). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Homewood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the United States Gypsum Corporation.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,543 people, 7,845 households, and 5,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,972.3 people per square mile (1,531.3/km2). There were 8,521 housing units at an average density of 1,735.3 per square mile (669.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $76,945. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $30,945. About 3.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
