Claremont Summary
Claremont is a small village located in Grundy County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Claremont was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Claremont, New Hampshire, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1867, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad built a line through Claremont, connecting it to the larger cities of Chicago and Joliet. This allowed the village to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
In the late 19th century, Claremont was a popular summer resort for wealthy Chicagoans. The village was home to several large hotels, including the Claremont Hotel, which was built in 1891.

Claremont is located at 41°25'17" North, 88°20'45" West (41.4214, -88.3458). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
