Bement Summary
Bement is a small village located in Piatt County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Bement was founded in 1854 by William Bement, a settler from New York. The village was originally known as Bementville, but the name was changed to Bement in 1868. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Bement was a major stop on the Wabash Railroad, which ran through the village from 1871 to the early 1970s. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the village.
Geography
Bement is located at 39°59'45" North, 88°37'45" West (39.995833, -88.629167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Bement is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village also has a few manufacturing plants, including a factory that produces plastic products.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
