West Branch, Iowa is a small city located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Cedar River, approximately 25 miles north of Iowa City. The population was 2,322 at the 2010 census.
History
West Branch was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from New England. The town was named after the West Branch of the Cedar River, which runs through the city. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1857, the first school was built and the first church was organized. The first newspaper, the West Branch Times, was established in 1858.
In 1864, the first railroad line was built, connecting West Branch to Iowa City. This allowed for the growth of the city and the development of the local economy.
In 1871, the first bank was established in West Branch. The first telephone line was installed in 1883.
