History
Underwood was founded in 1856 by settlers from Ohio and Indiana. The town was named after the Underwood family, who were among the first settlers. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Underwood was a major shipping point for livestock and grain. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a newspaper, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
