Polk City Summary
Polk City is a city located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Polk City was first settled in 1846 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally called "Polktown" after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The town was renamed Polk City in 1856.
In 1857 the first post office was established in Polk City The town was incorporated in 1876

Economy
The economy of Polk City is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including the Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farm, which is located just outside of town.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the John Deere plant, which produces agricultural equipment.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 919.1 people per square mile (354.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 363.3 per square mile (140.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $36,964 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,964. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
