Pella, Iowa is a small city located in Marion County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Des Moines River, approximately 40 miles southeast of Des Moines. The city has a population of 10,352 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Marion County.
History
Pella was founded in 1847 by Dutch immigrants who had come to the area from the Netherlands. The city was named after the city of Pella in the Netherlands, which was the birthplace of the city's founder, Hendrik Pieter Scholte. The city was incorporated in 1857 and has since grown to become a major center of Dutch culture in the Midwest.
Geography
Pella is located at 41°24'17" North, 92°56'45" West (41.404722, -92.945278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Pella is home to several large employers, including Vermeer Corporation, a manufacturer of agricultural and industrial equipment, and Pella Corporation, a manufacturer of windows and doors. The city also has a strong agricultural base, with many farms located in the surrounding area.

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,352 people, 3,945 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,988.3 people per square mile (766.7/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 790.3 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
