Keokuk Summary
Keokuk, Iowa is a city located in Lee County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Mississippi River at the Iowa-Illinois border. The population was 10,780 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County and the largest city in the county.
History
Keokuk was founded in 1820 by a group of settlers led by William Hamilton. The city was named after the Sauk chief Keokuk, who had signed a treaty with the United States in 1804. The city was incorporated in 1847 and became the county seat of Lee County in 1848.
Keokuk was an important port city in the 19th century, as it was located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River. It was a major center for steamboat traffic and served as a gateway to the West. The city was also a major center for the production of pork and other agricultural products.
Keokuk was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, and the city was home to several prominent abolitionists. In 1858, the city was the site of the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Keokuk is located at 40°26′N 91°21′W (40.4333, -91.3500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Keokuk’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods plant, a John Deere plant, and a Hormel Foods plant. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 10,780 people, 4,541 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,326.2 people per square mile (511.7/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 609.3 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.

The per capita income for the city was $17,945.
