Chelsea is a small city located in Tama County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the Iowa River, approximately 20 miles east of Marshalltown and 40 miles west of Cedar Rapids. The population of Chelsea was 1,093 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest incorporated city in the state of Iowa.
History
The area that is now Chelsea was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “New Germany” and was later renamed “Chelsea” after the English city of the same name. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Chelsea was a thriving agricultural community, with a population of over 1,000 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

Chelsea is located at 41°59'25" North, 92°37'45" West (41.990278, -92.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 671.4 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
