Taylor County Summary

Taylor County is located in the state of Iowa in the United States. It is bordered by Adams County to the north, Union County to the east, Ringgold County to the south, and Adair County to the west. The county seat is Bedford, and the largest city is Lenox. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,317.

History

The area that is now Taylor County was first settled in the 1830s. The county was officially organized in 1847 and named after President Zachary Taylor. The first county seat was located in Bedford, which was established in 1851.
In the late 19th century, the county was home to several coal mines, which provided employment for many of the residents. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the county's economy shifted to agriculture.

Geography

Taylor County is located in south-central Iowa. It is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The Middle River flows through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds. The county is mostly covered in grassland, with some wooded areas in the north.
The county has a total area of 517 square miles, of which 515 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water.
