History

Palo Alto County was established in 1851, and was named after the Spanish phrase for “tall tree.” The county was originally part of the Iowa Territory, and was later included in the Minnesota Territory. The county was organized in 1857, and the first county seat was located in West Bend. In 1859, the county seat was moved to Emmetsburg.
The first settlers in the county were mostly of Irish and German descent. The first settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the fertile soil. The first industry in the county was lumbering, and the first sawmill was built in 1856.
