Geography

Montgomery County is located in the rolling hills of south-central Iowa. The county is bordered by Adair County to the north, Madison County to the east, Warren County to the south, and Guthrie County to the west. The county has a total area of 544 square miles, of which 543 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. The county is drained by the Middle Raccoon River, which flows through the center of the county.
The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,220 feet. The lowest point is located in the southeast corner, at an elevation of 860 feet. The county is mostly rural, with the majority of the land being used for agricultural purposes.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
The median age in the county was 41.3 years. 24.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.2% were from 25 to 44; 27.2% were from 45 to 64; and 17.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the county was 49.2% male and 50.8% female.
