Franklin County Summary

Franklin County, Iowa is located in the northeastern part of the state and is bordered by Hardin County to the north, Butler County to the east, Wright County to the south, and Hamilton County to the west. History

The area that is now Franklin County was originally inhabited by the Sac and Fox tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1840s. The county was officially established in 1851 and named after Benjamin Franklin.
The first county seat was located in Alexander, but it was moved to Hampton in 1858. The county was largely agricultural, with corn, oats, and hay being the main crops. The first railroad line was built in 1867, connecting Hampton to Cedar Falls.
The county experienced a population boom in the late 19th century, with the population increasing from 4,000 in 1880 to over 10,000 by 1900. This growth was largely due to the influx of immigrants from Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
