Buchanan County Summary

Buchanan County, Iowa is located in the northeastern corner of the state and is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was established in 1837 and named after James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,958, making it the fourth least populous county in Iowa.

Geography

Buchanan County is located in the northeastern corner of Iowa and is bordered by Black Hawk County to the north, Fayette County to the east, Delaware County to the south, and Benton County to the west. The county covers an area of 576 square miles and is mostly rural, with only two incorporated cities, Independence and Quasqueton. The county is located in the Driftless Area, a region of the Midwest that was not glaciated during the last ice age. As a result, the county is characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, and numerous streams and rivers. The Wapsipinicon River flows through the county, and the Cedar River forms the western border.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,958 people, 8,093 households, and 5,619 families residing in the county. The population density was 36.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.3% White, 0.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $45,945 and the median income for a family was $54,945. The per capita income for the county was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

Buchanan County is largely rural and agricultural. The county is home to several large farms, including the largest dairy farm in Iowa. The county is also home to several small businesses, including a number of manufacturing companies. The county is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the historic Independence Depot and the Quasqueton Historic District.
The county is served by two major highways, U.S. Route 20 and Iowa Highway 150. The county is also served by the Cedar Valley Regional Airport, which is located in nearby Waterloo.

History

Buchanan County was established in 1837 and named after James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. The county was originally part of Black Hawk County, but was split off in 1837. The county was largely rural and agricultural until the late 19th century, when the railroad arrived and the county began to industrialize. The county experienced a period of rapid growth in the early 20th century, and the population peaked in 1950. Since then, the population has declined slightly, but the county remains largely rural and agricultural.
