Anamosa Summary
Anamosa, Iowa is a small city located in Jones County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Jones County and is located along the Wapsipinicon River. The population of Anamosa was 5,533 at the 2010 census, an increase from 5,304 at the 2000 census.
History
The area that is now Anamosa was first settled in 1838 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as Buffalo Forks, but was later renamed Anamosa, which is derived from the Native American word for “white fawn”. The town was officially incorporated in 1872.
Anamosa was an important stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town from 1872 to 1980. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from Anamosa.
Geography
Anamosa is located at 42°7′17″N 91°19′17″W (42.121400, -91.321300). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.78 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Anamosa’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large employers, including Anamosa State Penitentiary, Anamosa Community Schools, Anamosa Care Center, and Anamosa Machine Works.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,304 people, 2,093 households, and 1,372 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,269.2 people per square mile (489.3/km2). There were 2,231 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,917. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
