Rochelle Summary
Rochelle is a small town located in Wilcox County, Georgia, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 50 miles south of Macon. The population of Rochelle was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Rochelle was founded in 1872 by the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company. The town was named after the daughter of the company's president, William E. Rochelle. The town was incorporated in 1873 and was the county seat of Wilcox County until 1912.
Geography
Rochelle is located at 31°45'25" North, 83°25'45" West (31.756944, -83.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Rochelle's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large poultry farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 30.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
