Wheeler County Summary

Wheeler County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. It is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,421, making it the second-least populous county in Georgia. The county seat is Alamo.

History

Wheeler County was created on December 19, 1912 from parts of Montgomery, Telfair, and Wilcox counties. It was named for Confederate General Joseph Wheeler.

Geography

Wheeler County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Georgia. It is bordered by Montgomery County to the north, Telfair County to the east, Wilcox County to the south, and Laurens County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The county is located in the Ocmulgee River basin and is drained by the Ocmulgee River and its tributaries. The county is located in the Ocmulgee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin.

Economy

The economy of Wheeler County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to a variety of crops, including cotton, corn, soybeans, peanuts, and hay. The county also has a thriving timber industry.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 7,421 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 17.0 inhabitants per square mile (6.6/km2). There were 3,521 housing units at an average density of 8.0 per square mile (3.1/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% white, 40.2% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population.
In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.2% were English. Of the 2,845 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 30.7% were non-families, and 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09. The median age was 38.7 years.
