Lanier County Summary
Lanier County is a county located in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,078. The county seat is Lakeland. The county was created on August 17, 1920, and named for poet Sidney Lanier.
History
Lanier County was created in 1920 from parts of Berrien and Lowndes counties. It was named for poet Sidney Lanier, who was born in nearby Hall County. The county seat was originally located in the town of Ray City, but was moved to Lakeland in 1923.
Geography
Lanier County is located in the south-central part of Georgia, approximately 50 miles north of the Florida border. It is bordered by Berrien County to the north, Clinch County to the east, Lowndes County to the south, and Cook County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4.2 square miles (1.0%) is water.
The county is located in the Okefenokee Swamp region of Georgia, and is home to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The county is also home to the Stephen C. Foster State Park, which is located on the western edge of the Okefenokee Swamp.
Economy
The economy of Lanier County is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The county is home to several large timber companies, and the timber industry is the largest employer in the county. Other major industries include poultry farming, cattle ranching, and tourism.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 10,078 people, 3,845 households, and 2,717 families residing in the county. The population density was 23 people per square mile (9/km2). There were 4,541 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $21,945 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
