Geography

Butts County is located in the central part of Georgia, about 40 miles southeast of Atlanta. It is bordered by Lamar County to the north, Monroe County to the east, Henry County to the south, and Spalding County to the west. The county has a total area of 246 square miles, of which 244 square miles is land and 2 square miles (0.8%) is water.
The county is located in the Piedmont region of Georgia, with the majority of the county being flat or gently rolling terrain. The western part of the county is part of the Upper Ocmulgee River watershed, while the eastern part is part of the Lower Ocmulgee River watershed. The county is drained by several creeks, including Big Indian Creek, Little Indian Creek, and Big Sandy Creek.

History

Butts County was created in 1825 from parts of Henry, Monroe, and Jasper counties. It was named for Samuel Butts, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed in the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779.
The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with cotton being the main crop. The county was also home to several gristmills and sawmills.
In the early 20th century, the county began to industrialize, with several textile mills being built in the county. The county also became a popular tourist destination, with several resorts being built along the Ocmulgee River.

The racial makeup of the county was 73.2% White, 22.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. 4.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
