Bulloch County Summary

Bulloch County is located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the Savannah metropolitan area and is bordered by Effingham County to the north, Screven County to the east, Jenkins County to the south, and Evans County to the west. The county seat is Statesboro, which is also the largest city in the county.

History

Bulloch County was created in 1796 from a portion of the colonial parish of St. Philip's. It was named for Archibald Bulloch, the first provincial president of Georgia. The county was originally part of the colonial parishes of St. Philip's and St. Matthew's, which were divided into the counties of Bulloch, Effingham, and Screven in 1777.
In the early 19th century, Bulloch County was home to a large number of plantations, which were worked by enslaved African Americans. After the Civil War, the county's economy shifted to small-scale farming and timber production. In the late 19th century, the county was home to several sawmills and turpentine stills.
In the early 20th century, the county's economy shifted again, this time to cotton production. The county was also home to several large-scale dairy farms. In the mid-20th century, the county's economy shifted again, this time to poultry production.

Geography

Bulloch County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Georgia. It is bordered by Effingham County to the north, Screven County to the east, Jenkins County to the south, and Evans County to the west. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, of which 543 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water.
The county is located in the Coastal Plain region of Georgia and is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The Ogeechee River forms the western border of the county, and the Canoochee River forms the eastern border. The county is home to several large lakes, including Lake Sinclair, Lake Oconee, and Lake Jackson.

The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 25.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races.
The median income for a household in the county was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. The per capita income for the county was $19,845. About 17.2% of families and 22.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
