Alma Summary
Alma is a city located in Bacon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bacon County.
History
Alma was founded in 1854 as the county seat of Bacon County. The city was named after the daughter of a local judge, who was named Alma. The city was incorporated in 1856.
During the Civil War, Alma was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces on July 30, 1864. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.
Geography
Alma is located at 31°37'25" North, 82°25'17" West (31.623607, -82.421445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Alma is the home of the Bacon County School System, which serves the county's students. The city is also home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a furniture store, a grocery store, and a bank.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,890 people, 1,541 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 925.2 people per square mile (356.9/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 407.2 per square mile (157.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.45% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,964. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
