Polk City Summary
Polk City is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,516 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Polk City was founded in 1883 by William J. Van Fleet, a former Confederate soldier. The city was named after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1925.

Economy
The economy of Polk City is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several farms, including citrus, cattle, and poultry. The city is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Polk City Wildlife Park and the Polk City Historical Museum.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,516 people, 590 households, and 431 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.2 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 291.3 per square mile (112.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 590 households, out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
