Blair Summary
Blair is a city located in Washington County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,990 at the 2010 census.
History
Blair was founded in 1869 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after railroad official John I. Blair. The city was incorporated in 1885.
Geography
Blair is located at 41°31'25" North, 96°9'25" West (41.523607, -96.156890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Blair is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including Cargill, Inc., a global food processing and trading company, and ConAgra Foods, a food processing and packaging company. Other major employers include the Blair Community Schools, the Washington County Hospital, and the Washington County Courthouse.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 7,990 people, 3,072 households, and 2,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 3,307 housing units at an average density of 637.3 per square mile (246.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.3% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,919. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
