Plainfield Summary
Plainfield is a town located in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 27,631 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Plainfield was first settled in 1822 by William and Susannah Osborn. The town was originally known as Crossroads because of its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1839, the name was changed to Plainfield after the local church. The town was officially incorporated in 1839.
Plainfield was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North. The town was also a major stop on the Monon Railroad, which connected Indianapolis to Chicago.
Geography
Plainfield is located at 39°39′N 86°23′W (39.65, -86.38). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (29 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) is water.
Economy
Plainfield is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The town is also home to several large employers, including Amazon, FedEx, and Walmart.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 27,631 people, 10,717 households, and 7,717 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,491.3 people per square mile (962.2/km2). There were 11,717 housing units at an average density of 1,053.7 per square mile (407.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 5.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 10,717 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $59,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
