Poplar Summary

Poplar, Wisconsin is a small village located in Douglas County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the banks of the Chippewa River, about 25 miles east of Superior, Wisconsin. The population of Poplar was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Poplar was first settled in 1883 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The village was named after the Poplar River, which runs through the area. The first post office was established in 1884. In the early 1900s, the village was a major lumbering center, with several sawmills and logging camps in the area. The village was incorporated in 1906.
In the early 20th century, Poplar was a major center for the production of paper products. The village was home to several paper mills, including the Poplar Paper Company, which was founded in 1906. The company was the largest employer in the village for many years.

Poplar is located at 46°25'N 91°45'W (46.4133, -91.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
