Oxford Summary

Oxford, Wisconsin is a small village located in Marquette County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the banks of the Fox River, about 25 miles northwest of Madison. The village has a population of about 1,000 people and is part of the Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield-Wisconsin Dells Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Oxford was first settled in 1848 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Oxfordville” and was named after the city of Oxford, England. The village was incorporated in 1872 and was the first village in Marquette County.
The village was a major hub for the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Fox River was used to transport logs to sawmills in the area. The village also had a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a cheese factory.
