Boscobel was founded in 1849 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after the Boscobel House in England, which was the home of the Duke of York. The city was incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Boscobel was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a furniture factory.

Boscobel is located at 43°7′25″N 90°45′17″W (43.123611, -90.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km2), all of it land.

The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.

The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
