Babcock Summary

Babcock is a village located in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Babcock was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Babcock's Corners" after the first settler, John Babcock. The village was officially incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Babcock is located at 44°25'17" North, 90°2'17" West (44.4214, -90.0381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Babcock is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 790.3 people per square mile (305.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 324.3 per square mile (125.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
