Imperial Summary

Imperial is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

History

Imperial was founded in 1876 by the Imperial Land Company, which was formed by a group of investors from Pittsburgh. The borough was named after the Imperial Hotel, which was located in the area. The hotel was named after the Imperial Palace in Vienna, Austria.
The first settlers in the area were German immigrants who came to the area in the late 19th century. The borough was incorporated in 1891.

Economy

Imperial is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The borough also has a few industrial businesses, including a steel mill and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,845.2 people per square mile (1,485.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 1,619.2 per square mile (625.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.81% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
