West Point Summary

West Point, Kentucky is a small city located in Hardin County, Kentucky. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, just south of Louisville. The city has a population of approximately 2,000 people and is part of the Elizabethtown-Fort Knox Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

West Point was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Virginia. The town was named after the nearby West Point military post, which was established in 1792. The town was incorporated in 1820 and quickly became a thriving river port. During the Civil War, West Point was a major supply depot for the Union Army. After the war, the town continued to grow and by the late 19th century, it was a major hub for the tobacco industry.

Geography

West Point is located in Hardin County, Kentucky, on the banks of the Ohio River. The city is situated at an elevation of 545 feet and has a total area of 1.2 square miles. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

Economy

West Point’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a paper mill, a steel mill, and a plastics plant. The city also has a thriving tourism industry, with several popular attractions, such as the West Point Museum and the West Point Country Club.

As of the 2010 census, West Point had a population of 2,000 people. The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 1.6% from other races.
