Hebron Summary

Hebron is a town located in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Valparaiso-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hebron was founded in 1834 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the biblical city of Hebron, which is located in the West Bank. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first school was built in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Hebron began to experience a period of industrial growth. The Hebron Manufacturing Company was established in 1887, and the Hebron Brick Company was established in 1895. These companies provided employment for many of the town's residents.

Geography

Hebron is located at 41°25'25" North, 87°14'17" West (41.423, -87.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hebron's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large farms, as well as several small businesses. The Hebron Manufacturing Company and the Hebron Brick Company are two of the town's largest employers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,719 people, 1,039 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 902.2 per square mile (348.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.81% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races.
