Lorimor Summary

Lorimor is a small city located in Union County, Iowa. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 40 miles south of Des Moines. The city has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Creston Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Lorimor was founded in 1881 by William Lorimor, a local farmer. The city was originally named Lorimor Station, as it was a stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1883 and the name was changed to Lorimor.
In the early 1900s, Lorimor was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a lumberyard, and a variety of other businesses. The city also had a number of churches, including the Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian churches.
In the 1950s, Lorimor began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better job opportunities. The city’s population has remained relatively stable since then, with a slight increase in recent years.

Geography

Lorimor is located in south-central Iowa, approximately 40 miles south of Des Moines. The city is situated in the rolling hills of the Loess Hills region. The city is bordered by the Middle Raccoon River to the east and the West Nishnabotna River to the west.
The city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The city has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.

Economy

Lorimor’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a variety of other agricultural businesses. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a variety of other retail stores.
