Jesup Summary

Jesup, Georgia is a small city located in Wayne County, Georgia. It is the county seat of Wayne County and is located about 50 miles north of Savannah and about 30 miles south of Brunswick. The city is situated on the Altamaha River and is part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Jesup was 10,214.

History

Jesup was founded in 1824 and named after General Thomas Jesup, a hero of the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1866 and was the county seat of Wayne County. During the Civil War, Jesup was a major supply depot for the Confederate Army. After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and development. In the late 19th century, Jesup was a major center for the timber industry and was home to several sawmills.

Geography

Jesup is located at 31°41'N 81°45'W (31.6833, -81.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Jesup is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several large timber companies, including Georgia-Pacific and International Paper. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a large poultry processing plant. In addition, Jesup is home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,214 people, 3,845 households, and 2,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,241.2 people per square mile (478.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 498.2 per square mile (192.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
