Osceola is a city located in Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated along the Mississippi River, approximately 40 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee. The population was 8,751 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Mississippi County.

History

Osceola was founded in 1837 by William Henry Harrison Clayton, a prominent lawyer and politician. The city was named after the Seminole leader Osceola, who had died in 1838. The city was incorporated in 1853 and was the county seat of Mississippi County until 1868, when it was moved to Blytheville.
Osceola was a major port on the Mississippi River during the 19th century, and was a major center of the cotton trade. The city was also a major stop on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway.

Geography

Osceola is located at 35°45'25" North, 90°41'17" West (35.756944, -90.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Osceola is a major center of the cotton industry in Arkansas. The city is home to several cotton gins, as well as a cottonseed oil mill. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a paper mill, and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,751 people, 3,541 households, and 2,310 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,062.2 people per square mile (409.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 480.2 per square mile (185.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,813, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
