History
Lepanto was founded in 1871 and named after the Battle of Lepanto, a naval battle in 1571 between the Ottoman Empire and a coalition of European powers. The town was incorporated in 1883.
The Lepanto Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
Economy
Lepanto is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a cotton gin, and a grain elevator. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 790 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 735.2 per square mile (284.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.44% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 790 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females.
