Kirby Summary

Kirby is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, approximately 20 miles northwest of Little Rock. The town was founded in 1882 and was named after the local postmaster, William Kirby. The population of Kirby was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Kirby is located at 34°45'25" North, 92°30'45" West (34.7569, -92.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Kirby is a small, rural town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a post office and a bank. The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a woodworking shop.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.6 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,000 for females.
