History

Green Forest was founded in 1856 by settlers from the nearby town of Eureka Springs. The town was named for the abundance of trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1858.
Green Forest was incorporated in 1883. The town was a major stop on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, which ran through the area in the late 19th century.
The town was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. The Battle of Green Forest was fought on April 6, 1862, between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious, and the town was spared from destruction.

There were 890 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
