Cove Summary

Cove is a city located in the northwest corner of Arkansas in the United States. It is the county seat of Logan County and is part of the Fort Smith metropolitan area. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Cove was founded in 1871 by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. The city was named after the nearby Cove Creek. The first post office was established in 1872.
Cove was incorporated in 1881. The city was a major stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Cove had become a major shipping point for cotton, livestock, and timber.

Geography

Cove is located at 35°25'25" North, 94°17'45" West (35.423750, -94.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Cove's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as several timber companies. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the city.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 790 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.45% White, 0.36% African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
