Clarendon Summary

Clarendon is a city located in Monroe County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County.

History

Clarendon was founded in 1871 by the Arkansas and Louisiana Railroad. The town was named after Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, a British statesman and historian. The first post office was established in 1872.
Clarendon was incorporated in 1883. The city was a major cotton shipping center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to a large lumber mill.

Clarendon's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,890 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,310.2 people per square mile (505.3/km2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 545.2 per square mile (210.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 28.90% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 1.45% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.7 males.
