History

Vernon was founded in 1821 and is the county seat of Lamar County. The town was named after George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The town was originally a trading post and was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Tuscaloosa and Jackson, Mississippi.
In the late 19th century, Vernon was a major center for the timber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies. The town also had a thriving cotton industry, with several cotton gins and warehouses.
In the early 20th century, Vernon was a major center for the coal mining industry. The town was home to several coal mines, which provided jobs for many of the town's residents.
In the late 20th century, Vernon's economy shifted away from agriculture and mining and towards tourism.
