Gordo Summary

Gordo, Alabama is a small town located in Pickens County, Alabama. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

Geography

Gordo is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, in the northwest corner of Pickens County. It is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Alabama State Route 17. The town is located approximately 20 miles east of Tuscaloosa and 40 miles west of Birmingham. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas. The town is surrounded by forests and is home to several creeks and streams.

History

Gordo was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The town was named after a local Native American chief, Chief Gordo. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was a thriving agricultural center for many years. The town was also home to several cotton mills and other industries.
In the early 1900s, Gordo was a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. The town was also home to several resorts and hotels.
