Chatom Summary

Chatom is a town located in Washington County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Washington County and is located in the southwestern corner of the state. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Chatom is located at 31°14'25" North, 88°17'45" West (31.240278, -88.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

History

The area that is now Chatom was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia. The town was originally known as "Chatom Station" and was a stop on the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1891 and was named after the Choctaw Indian Chief, Chatom.
The town was a major center for the timber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The timber industry was so important to the town that it was nicknamed "The Lumber Capital of the South".

Economy

The economy of Chatom is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several large timber companies, including Weyerhaeuser, International Paper, and Georgia-Pacific. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,817 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 817.2 people per square mile (315.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 382.3 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
