Ariton Summary

Ariton is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Dale County, Alabama. It is situated on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River, approximately 10 miles north of the Florida state line. The town was founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1887. As of the 2010 census, the population of Ariton was 545.

History

The area that is now Ariton was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The town was named after the Ariton family, who were among the first settlers. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the late 1800s, Ariton was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, and the town was home to several cotton gins. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a brickyard.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline. The boll weevil infestation of the 1920s caused many farmers to abandon their land. The Great Depression of the 1930s further weakened the town's economy.

Geography

Ariton is located at 31°14'N 85°45'W (31.2333, -85.7500). It is situated on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River, approximately 10 miles north of the Florida state line. The town is located in the southeastern corner of Dale County, Alabama.
The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.

Economy

The economy of Ariton is largely based on agriculture. Cotton is the main crop, and the town is home to several cotton gins. Other crops grown in the area include corn, soybeans, and peanuts.
